The Capes Battle

As much as I can say about that lion who was Jicho is that he was and still is very lucky to be alive, because being born of a dark period in our time luck favored him.
A chance he had to be the first in a family of four brothers.
A chance he had, so to be his father's favorite because he had the same defect, very rare and considered a wonder by any lions.

Duality of colors of a mane is not uncommon, however, a mane that has three colors yes. He was even rarer than this for he had a four colored mane was in addition the young lion was born with patches of pigmentation on deferred colors than his red fur and two different colored eyes.

In short, let’s say Jicho was regarded by his father as “the gemstone of the earth”.
He gave his son more attention and respect, keeping it secret to his other sons or his own wife.
Jicho grew happy, without missing anything and didn’t ever get any troubles. Not that he was always very wise, even today he cannot help being arrogant for a lion, or makes the stupidest jokes toward his brothers and friends. Jicho was a very respectable young lion for he did not grow in the same condition as his father, or even his brothers,
Jicho was found to be the most benevolent of all the son of the Hills Kingdoms (to come under the name the "four brother’s Kingdom" thereafter.)

So back to the fact that Jicho was born in a very bad time... not that he was in danger when he was young, no, but was he only one season younger than himself and he would have been as dead as many others.

The danger came from the land where he lived itself; an ever-present conflict between elephants, African buffalo and hippos in the river bisecting the kingdom setting up in a large swamp. The problem was that the elephant in the dry season has the horrible habit of reversing the trees all around the riverbank and/or monopolize water sources. On the other hand, angry hippos strive to try by all means to maintain their water territory large enough for the dry season. They will then block up the river, as a sign of irritation, and the poor buffaloes couldn’t then have a fair share back to their own territory, not to mention the poor animals stuck in their disputes. Buffalo, in anger, threaten and harass the lions of their land, blaming them, being very impatient and dangerous against the poor cubs that would not risk to even raise their ears in their presence. Not to mention here that when the marsh water falls down so does the river into the Pridelands.

Working hard to maintain peace Jicho’s father (Usiku) comes to an arrangement between animals of his kingdom and the kingdom touched nearby. Hippos, elephants and buffaloes must then work hard. Elephants promised to clean the area around the river to prevent blocking it or blocking the places where hippos eat. Hippos also ask to help maintain the river themselves and their precious gardening to prevent debris to block the waterways.
The buffalos had nothing much to do then to report if something bad happened ever again and they where sent back to where they belonged and told to leave the elephant’s territory alone so those could eat more in peace and not cause much more trouble. The king was angry at those buffaloes, they where impolite, stubborn and very selfish.
Unfortunately, it was not what wanted to hear the patriarch of the buffalos. Hoping to get more than what he needed, he cried for the injustice to be cut away from a piece of land by the evil lions for making his flock inherently more vulnerable to their attacks, the patriarch and his flock then returned to the very ends of the kingdom, the marsh, fulminating.

But, one of those days where the water is fatally to its most critical, the hippo decided to go on a strike of work and buffaloes were greatly affected. Water shortages had it their part of the land and they lost almost all children born that year. Raging the patriarch came to King threatening to expel him from his own kingdom where he sat in the region if it did nothing. The king calmed him then went to try to reason with the hippos.

However, that day there were no promises kept, nor cooperation from the hippos. Elephants, wiser and strong were outraged, because they worked hard to maintain the water level while the hippos leave their waters be, blocking the water from the buffalo. They were outraged, but too tired to welcome a greater burden and do the work of hippos. Weeks pass before finally the hippo decides that promise must be kept, it was time to clean up their mess. Unfortunately for the Lions, passing by a vulture already had heard too much. As you know, but do not know the lions, vultures have in them some incredible malfeasance, wanting only more deaths to make a feast.

This vulture went to alert his master and "Gods" that saw in this ways well diverted for his own vengeance
(the cause of this is another story). The devil ordered his devilish follower, Kichawi, to go poison the entire family of the hippo leaders (except of a single son), leaving obvious traces of poisoning. Hippos thought only one thing; buffaloes did find a hideous way to punish them. Without warning the lions, they would have justice their own way.

It then triggered a war. Hippos wanting justice marched toward the land of the buffalos, eye for eye.
The buffalos where hit hard. They thought that this was a direct order from the lions, being exasperated at them so much to send their hippos to eliminate them.

It was sunrise when the buffalo came for the lions. In the land where live Jicho, there is no large stone and no caves to protected them. The peoples and their children living near a scattered pile of rocks to hide themselves from rogues.

The buffaloes gave no explanation, giving to the lion no time to react. They scattered and began to search for the youngest for lions too would lost their children. The king was enraged; having a very short time he ordered a retreat to save as many lives as he could. Poor Jicho wasn’t ready for this; the young lion was just beginning to have a mane.

The Lions had nowhere to hide!
The father gathered the most lions as he could then they turned away, they went to bump into the buffalo. Males had to make so much effort to be preferred to the young and distracted the buffaloes from them. Horrified by the scene, the four younger brothers hesitated, one of them, Jicho ran to help his father while his brothers choose to help others by carrying cubs in their mouths to the safety of the mountains of the east.

Jicho’s situation was more than desperate, although his father or the other lions were only very little less in trouble because the young lion was young and never had he get to hunt the large prey buffalos where. They were ruthless, they gored the lions, trampled them, surrounding them on all sides, injuries where inevitable, lions had to take a fight of ones against many.

This is where jicho saw him. His father miserably clung with his fangs and claws to the side of the patriarch. He had cashed clogs hit because it was very misplaced due to the fact that he had also to avoid the horns of all the other buffaloes wanting to help their leader.
The king's son jumped awkwardly on the buffalo trying to help the leader and kill his father but he was brutally sent back in the dust. The poor lion somehow avoided hooves of dozens of raging buffalo when then felt the greatest pain he had ever felt. Buffalo had gored his left arm. Stuck on his horns, the lion was rejected in the air shouting, his wound suddenly opened from the arm and almost to the back. The little lion fell, trying to get up while the wounded buffalo that hit him turned toward him to finish what he started. The lion was mauled for a good moment when the buffalo began to struggle, his father and two other lions had jumped on the back of the buffalo who, finally getting tired feel on the king’s son, cutting off his breath and blocking the rear of his entire body.

Jicho couldn’t stand up anymore; he couldn’t see what was going on. He only saw dust and hooves around him for what seemed an eternity, protected by the body of the same animal that was suffocating him by it’s weight.
Then nothing, only silence could be eared. As silent as grave as all the lions being into this fight against the buffalo were dead or dying or nowhere to be found.
"Jicho"

It was his father, the lion he didn’t recognized first because of his facial injury and his body covered by dust.
- Jicho, repeated his father in a breath full of suffering.
- F-a-th-er ... jicho breath was even shorter than his poor father because of the weight of the animal and his bruised body.

The king smiled painfully as he heard his son because he thought he was dead.
- So painful, Jicho whispered.
- Hush... I promise... it’ll be... over soon…
- Father... I'm… afraid.

The king crawled toward his son, he then extended one leg toward him and placed it near his son’s face (and not on its face not to stifle him further.) He looked a while into his eyes, catching his breath. He then stretched a claw to his son and stroked his nose, as he was accustomed to do when his son was worried. The king swallowed his own pain and smiled to his son.
- Me too... but we... are... warriors...
- War-ri-ors...

Jicho began to see black invading his sight as his breathing was difficult and that he suffocated slowly under the buffalo. Jicho then had a little smile.
- The... moost... c-o-u-r-a-g-e-o-u-s...

Then silence.
- Jicho… Jicho ... ...

The son remained silent, and then taking a deep breathe.
- Together? This was the last word Jicho said before he fainted.
- Always, blew his father.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jicho took a deep distressed breath as the buffalo was moved from his body and the young lion inspired as much air as pain allowed him to take. The prince picked up a few of his spirits when he was lifted off the ground by two of his brothers, while the third looked on their backs.
- Be careful ... my ... my Gods, my poor brother! Mgoto was sobbing.
- f-a-th-er…
- He's fine, lied Ajabu.
- Please stay, Gutusha added.

Jicho had too many bruises, too many injuries and broken ribs in order to move any muscle.
The poor second prince was not satisfied to be so forced to look down.

It took weeks just to stand, months to walk or to run properly, years to stop being haunted by the thought of his father his broken body and last words. The brothers and their kingdom were broken, split apart, but they didn’t wanted to take a decision to fight for the throne. They had lost already too much and buffalos could always come back. Zero had survived on the battlefield, several lions had known a gruesome end, sadly some cubs too and all would have been killed if the king had not done this diversion, for buffalo were better runners than lions by far.

No son where officially chosen as an heir to the throne and the brothers agreed to split the kingdom, separating the territory of animals used to have quarrels, distributing the weight of the responsibility of this kingdom on their four pairs of shoulders. They returned slowly, but surely all the respect they had lost from some of the animals.
All conflicts would be dealt through themselves even if it would means to get into war against each other’s.
Unfortunately, conflicts where more than often and the brothers developed some resentment toward each other’s, some accumulated frustrations and a developed more selfish and violent temperament with time, many wars and internal problems.

Mgoto was the most affected, because he had to take care of the territory that had taken the buffalos. To see the face of his father's killers was hard to endure day after day, and not having enough smaller prey, he could not banish all the buffalo even if he wanted to so much, even at the cost of many more lives with probably his own. When his first wife vanished he became almost mad and oh, so bitter. So much lions would oppose to him and how he dealt with the buffalos… he had even to fight to find another mates.

Gutusha was carried away by the racism of his friends. He turned against his brother Ajabu who had the most beautiful part of the kingdom. Gutusha accused him of selfishness many wars occurred to take his brother’s land.

Ajabu being harassed by Mgoto and Gutusha for his land became dark, even cruel to his own son, he hid him and then banned him from his lands, seeing only himself in his son... hating him.

Jicho had the lands where hippos sat near the swamps and near the land of King Mohatu. There was very little news of his brothers and only a few visits. He was outraged by the changes in two of his brothers. He appeared one day after Ajabu and they discussed over and over, they agreed to exchange their land. Now if his two brothers wanted to harass Ajabu, they would have to walk over his dead body. It stopped several wars, slowed others.

The brothers still felt a little love for each other’s, little, but enough to not take the battles too seriously... these small conflicts becoming almost sets of bad habit, unfortunately...
